Recently TFBIS funded Landcare Research to conduct a survey to gather metadata about legally protected areas in New Zealand, particularly targetting local councils. As part of the project we have completed a Protected Areas Network (PAN-NZ) website and a companion web-based survey to gather as much information and metadata as we can.

We expect the survey to take 5-10mins, we will give you feedback (see
below) as well, so the data we collect will have national benefit to everyone.

Some of the questions are GIS related, if you could pass those on to your GIS administrator in your organisation that would be most appreciated.

The PAN-NZ Website can be found here:

The PAN-NZ Metadata Web Survey can be found here:

NOTE: You will need to create a user account & indicate your organisation.
If you have problems, please use the HELP! facility located under Contacts.

Some quick comments on the philosophy and design of the survey:
We wanted to provide incentives for users to fill out the survey and give a little something back in the process. Therefore we've built in the following functionality:
-A status map that is dynamically updated as soon as someone has completed a survey. This only works for councils, as trying to depict national organisations like DOC is bit trickier -If metadata does not exist, users will have the ability to input basic metdata and, in return, will be supplied a standard ISO metadata file containing the basic information that they supplied -If metadata exists, users will be able to upload it and, depending on the format, immediately have it available for viewing or downloading.

We are currently processing the latest protected areas information and will post the statistics to the main PAN-NZ website within the next few weeks.

Thank you in advance for your input and assistance.
