Bob is a Senior Research Scientist with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) in Edinburgh, South Australia. His major activity is in providing scientific advice to staff within Defence’s Capability Development Group, the Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation and other elements within Australian Defence Organisation. Bob has forty years experience in surveying and mapping. This experience extends from technician level as a topographic surveyor, through technical managerial level, to professional levels as a cartographer (geospatial scientist) and as a senior research scientist.Bob’s presentation outlines the contemporary challenges facing Defence and the geo-strategic influences affecting the nation and the region and, as a consequence, the enduring need and commitment to map our area of geo-strategic interest. In order to meet these challenges, Defence will continue to work with the wider geospatial community within Australia through collaboration and cooperation using a range of structures.Bob’s topics will include: 4 An overview of the “Australian approach to warfare” 4 Contemporary geo-strategic influences 4 A changing geospatial environment including an overview of the Geospatial Information Infrastructure 4 Defence involvement with the wider community 4 Opportunities for the wider community 4 Opportunities under the CRC for Spatial Information, and 4 A vision for the future The cost is $40 for SSI members, $60 for non-members payable by cash or cheque to the Spatial Sciences Institute, PO Box 2701, Wellington.
